One of the common faults with the MK4 Golf is the electric windows failing, generally due to the plastic clips within the regulator mechanism cracking and falling apart.
This shows the state of the regulator mechanism when I'd removed the electric window motor and found the cables wrapped around the motor shaft. Fortunately I'd ordered a new regulator mechanism so was able to swap it out completely.
